Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Farveez Maharoof lauded Hardik Pandya for his improved fitness and backed him to play a crucial role for India in the forthcoming ICC World Cup.

Pandya's career has been plagued with injuries. The back surgery kept him out of action with the ball for a long time. But in the last 18 months, Pandya has spent a considerable amount of time on his fitness after recurring injuries kept him away from bowling. The premier all-rounder is now bowling regularly for the Men in Blue, lending much-needed balance to the side.

Since his return to the international scene, he has been brilliant. Not only has he been able to perform his duties as an all-rounder but whenever he has been given the role of captaincy he has done well. It is only fair that he has been projected as India's next T20I skipper.

With the next 50-over World Cup scheduled to be staged at home this year, the Indian team is also currently prioritizing ODIs over the other two formats. If India wants to win the World Cup, Pandya will have to perform exceedingly well in both departments.

Talking about Pandya's fitness and his importance in the current Indian setup, Maharoof said:

“Hundred percent. He will be that balance at number six or seven for India in ODIs. it’s a big year for India, hosting the World Cup. Even if India can get away with 4-5 overs from him and another all-rounder in Axar Patel can bowl ten, I reckon it will be a formidable line-up. Today we saw how he set up Nissanka with the first delivery."
