All-rounder Axar Patel nearly pulled off the impossible last evening against Sri Lanka in the 2nd T20I, where India lost the match by 16 runs. Patel, who slammed a 31-ball 65, earned praise from head coach Rahul Dravid for his performances for India in limited chances.

Patel, who came in with India in trouble at 57 for 5, etched stands with SuryaKumar Yadav and Shivam Mavi during his stay in the middle, which lasted until the final over.

Speaking at the post-match conference, Dravid hailed Patel for doing well for India in the absence of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

"He’s doing a very good job. His batting has improved leaps and bounds. We always knew his quality with the ball and it was just about developing his batting and it had been identified. He’s been with the team for over a year now and it’s an area of his game that we have identified.

It’s important for us to have that and Axar has got quite a lot of cricket recently, in the absence of Jadeja, and hasn’t let us down,"

The former India captain also hailed Mavi's showing with the bat, where the bowler made a 15-ball 26.

The third and final T20I will be held in Rajkot on Saturday, with the series locked at 1-1.
