On Tuesday morning, Cricket Australia announced a historic seven-year broadcast deal with Foxtel Group and Seven West Media for AUD 1.512 billion, beginning from mid-2024 onwards.

As part of the deal, CA's hottest T20 property, the Big Bash League (BBL), will see the number of matches reduced from 61 to 43 from the 2024-25 edition onwards.

The board said this would allow more players to participate in the league and catch more eyeballs during the holiday season.

The 2017-18 edition also had 43 BBL matches, which included post-round-robin fixtures, but has since added 18 more games to their schedule, inviting criticism from fans and players alike.

Over the years, the lack of Australian international players has decreased viewership and footfall in the stadiums.

The ongoing BBL 2022-23 season will see players like David Warner and Steve Smith play in the competition for the Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers, respectively.

More about the broadcast deal

The new seven-year deal will run until the 2030-31 season and will, most importantly, see Seven drop legal charges against CA.

As per the deal, Seven will broadcast all Men's Tests and Women's international matches and a minimum of 23 WBBL and 33 BBL games, with free streaming on 7Plus.

Meanwhile, every match will be shown live on Foxtel via Fox Cricket and Kayo Sports, including exclusive coverage of Men's white ball games and 10 BBL fixtures.
