Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have handed former national captain Mahela Jayawardene a one-year contract extension as a consultant coach with men's seniors as well as Under-19 and 'A' teams. Jayawardene joined SLC last year at the High-Performance Centre to provide 'strategic support' to players and teams.

According to Daily News, the former T20 World-Cup player's foremost focus will be the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023, and ICC U19 World Cup 2024.

Interestingly, the 2024 U19 World Cup will be hosted by Sri Lanka.

The board appointed Jayawardene as a consultant coach for the first time during the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, and since been an integral part of their cricketing system across various age groups.

The 45-year-old recently left his job as head coach for the Southern Brave in The Hundred league.

Jayawardene was also replaced by former South African Mark Boucher in the Mumbai Indian franchise after the owners decided to elevate the successful coach to a more global role within the MI eco-system.
