AUS vs SA: Proteas crumble again as Australia claim a thumping win

As expected, hosts Australia drubbed South Africa by an innings and 182 runs on Day 4 of the Boxing Day Test, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

The visitors couldn't put up a fight with the bat for the fourth consecutive time in the series, which led to their humiliating defeat.

As it panned out

The day began with South Africa stranded at 15 for 1, with Sarel Erwee and Theunis de Bruyn batting at 7* and 6*, respectively.

However, the duo could add only 32 more runs, as Mitchell Starc drew the first blood of the day for the hosts, removing Erwee for a 41-ball 21. Soon, De Bruyn and Khaya Zondo followed the southpaw, being dismissed for 28 and 1, respectively.

Although Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne (33 off 40) stitched a fighting stand of 63 runs, the latter's dismissal opened the floodgates for the Proteas, as their lower order fell like a pack of cards against the formidable Australian bowling attack. Bavuma contributed handy 65 runs, but it could only reduce the deficit.

Nathan Lyon emerged as the pick of the bowlers for Australia, scalping three wickets for 58 runs. Among others, Scott Boland claimed two, while Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Steve Smith grabbed one wicket apiece.
