Adelaide Strikers brought their A-game on Tuesday in the ninth match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2022-23 as the triumvirate of Matthew Short, Henry Thornton, and Colin de Grandhomme pummelled Sydney Thunder in a six-wicket victory.

Thornton, de Grandhomme tightens the grip

Alex Hales found form with the bat as the Sydney batter finally came among runs, leading his side towards a strong total despite Matthew Gikes and Rilee Rossouw's dismal outings.

With Oliver Davies, Hales took the attack to the Adelaide bowlers. Although the duo did not threaten the Strikers at any stage, maintaining a steady run-rate, they had perfectly set-up the innings for the slog overs.

However, de Grandhomme did not allow that to happen as his back-to-back wicket-taking overs meant Adelaide finished at 150-5 in their 20 overs.

Short's onrush

Chasing 151 runs, Adelaide were placed in a better position than Sydney going into the second innings despite losing the toss.

While they were subdued till the fifth over, what followed was an effective counter-attack by Short as his blazing batting display left very little for the other batters to do.

Short's 44-ball 65 ensured the asking rate remained within the reach, however, as he walked off the pitch with Adelaide at 110/3 in 14.3 overs, the Thunder saw light.

Adam Hose did not allow Sydney to break into that comeback window as Adelaide kept their winning-run intact, attaining their third victory of the season by six wickets.

Brief scores:

Sydney Thunder - 150/5 (20)

Alex Hales 68 (50), Oliver Davies 42 (30);
Henry Thornton 2-18 (3), Colin de Grandhomme 2-27 (4)

Adelaide Strikers - 151/4 (18.4)

Matthew Short 65 (44), Adam Hose 28*  (20);
Nathan McAndrew 2-25 (4), Gurinder Sandhu 1-18 (3.4)

Match Result: Adelaide Strikers won by six wickets.
