'He deserves a chance to finish the way he wants to': Ricky Ponting on Warner's Test Career

Australia's former captain Ricky Ponting backed David Warner amid tough times and stated that the veteran opener deserves the chance to finish his career the way he wants after another failure with the bat against South Africa in the first Test at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Warner was dismissed for a first-ball duck, thanks to a stunning bouncer bowled by Kagiso Rabada and a sensational grab by Khaya Zondo. Warner looked out of form in the recently concluded red-ball series as he averaged just 25.5 in the two-Test series.

Earlier in November, Warner himself dropped a hint that he might take a retirement from the longest format of the game to prolong his white-ball career.

Here's what Warner said:

"Test cricket will probably be the first one to fall off. It’s because that's how it will pan out. The T20 World Cup is in 2024, and the (one-day) World Cup is next year. Potentially it could be my last 12 months in Test cricket."

Speaking to Channel 7s, Ponting said that he hopes Warner will get back to form quickly

"I think what he should be doing is being as realistic and looking to the future as he can. "

"Like I said before, he deserves the chance to finish the way he wants to finish. I would hate to see him get to an Indian tour or at the start of the Ashes tour and then get the tap on the shoulder."

"That would be a disappointing way for his career to end..it might be after the Sydney Test. Let's wait and see. Also, I hope that he gets some runs between now and then."
