Shreyas Iyer becomes India's highest run-getter in 2022, fourth highest worldwide

A year that has been an awful dream for the Indian batters, Shreyas Iyer has shone the brightest in there. In the first innings of the Chattogram Test against Bangladesh, the Mumbai batter became the highest run-scorer for India in 2022.

Before the innings at Chattogram, Iyer had scored 1407 runs across formats. He was just behind Suryakumar Yadav (1424 runs) in terms of the most runs for India in 2022.

Out of 1407 runs, the 28-year-old had amassed 220 runs in the longest format and 463 runs in the T20Is. However, his best came in ODIs where he scored 724 runs at an average of 55.69, including a marvellous 113* against South Africa.

As far as the highest run-scorers are concerned, the stylish batter is just behind Pakistan's Babar Azam (2291), Litton Das (1780) and Mohammad Rizwan (1572). With three more innings after the current one to go, the Indian batter could easily go past Rizwan, but touching Babar and Litton seems tricky at the moment.

With the 2023 World Cup being around the corner, Iyer - at the moment - looks like a tested solution for India at number four -- the spot that has been a worrisome position for the Men in Blue since Yuvraj Singh's retirement.

At the time of writing, the 28-year-old is unbeaten at 41; and is pulling the visitors out of trouble alongside Cheteshwar Pujara. As of yet, the Indian total reads 174/4 at Tea on Day 1.
