India's premier domestic tournament, the Ranji Trophy 2022-23 gets underway today, with as many as 19 matches taking place across the length and breadth of the nation. Several Team India candidates will be in action trying to prove their mantle to selectors and scouts, who will be situated in various stadiums.

One such talent is Umran Malik, who has made a name for himself as an out-and-out pace bowler but failed to cement his place in the Indian squad. Malik, who represents Jammu and Kashmir, did not take the field against Madhya Pradesh in the Elite Group D encounter.

Former Indian player Wasim Jaffer has stated that his eyes will be on Malik this season. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, the Punjab Kings batting coach said that the young bowler is more suited to ODI and Tests than T20.

“Among the bowlers, I am very keen to look at how Umran Malik does for Jammu and Kashmir, how he plays the four-day format. I feel that he is better suited for Test and ODI cricket because he can bowl at pace and hit lengths consistently.”

The 23-year-old has played six First-Class games picking up 11 wickets and has featured in five ODIs and three T20Is as well.

Jaffer further stated players like — Sarfaraz Khan, Yashavsi Jaiswal, Shaikh Rasheed, and Yash Dhull — will be under the microscope this season having done well in the past year or so in various tournaments.
