The second One-Day International (ODI) between Bangladesh and India started off on a wrong foot for the visitors when skipper Rohit Sharma injured his thumb while fielding. Despite pegging the home side to 69 for 6, riding high on Mahmudullah's fifty and Mehidy Hasan Miraz's unbeaten 100, Bangladesh posted a stiff target of 272 runs.

Indian chase sans Sharma never got off the blocks only Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel showed grit and managed to keep the Indian team in the hunt. With the team in deep trouble, Sharma came out to bat at No.9 with a dislocated thumb and made his intentions clear from the get-go.

Skipper's 28-ball 51, however, was not enough for India to win as Bangladesh gained an unassailable 0-2 lead.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, while lauding Sharma's resilient knock, quizzed whether the Mumbai-born could have come into bat a few positions up the order.

Speaking to Sony Sports, Gavaskar said that Axar Patel could have batted differently if Sharma came out to bat after the fall of Iyer's wicket.

"Everybody knows about the quality and the class of the man. Since India came so close, the question is why didn’t he come to bat earlier? If he was going to bat at no. 9, he should have batted at no. 7. What that could’ve done is I think, Axar Patel could have played a bit differently,”

Both teams shift base to Chattogram, where the third and final ODI will be played on Saturday.
