The off-spinner Nathan Lyon has got past South Africa speedster Dale Steyn in terms of the number of wickets in the Test format.

The experienced campaigner achieved this feat in the ongoing fixture against West Indies at Perth while taking 2/61 in the first innings. In this process, he dismissed Jason Holder and Kemar Roach.

Lyon is now ranked ninth with 440 wickets to his name in 111 matches, with 20 five-wicket hauls. On the other hand, Steyn is 10th with 439 scalps in 93 games, including 26 five-wicket hauls.

Lyon made his Test debut in 2011 against Sri Lanka, and impressed with figures of 5/34 in the first innings. Since then, he has been a permanent member of the Aussie red-ball team due to his wicket-taking abilities on any surface.

Last year, the 35-year-old became only the third Australian after Shane Warne (708) and Glenn McGrath (563) to claim 400 wickets in the longest format. He registered his best match figures of 13/154 against Bangladesh in 2017.

The Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is ranked one place above Lyon with 442 wickets in 86 appearances. It will be interesting to see if Ashwin can continue his bright form in the Test format against Bangladesh later this month.
