Babar Azam should quit Pakistan's T20I captaincy: Shahid Afridi

Pakistan, under Babar Azam in T20Is, have scaled new heights - having featured in the finals of both the Asia Cup 2022 and T20 World Cup 2022. However, Azam's form with the bat has suffered rapidly, as he managed just 124 runs from seven matches in the recently concluded T20 World Cup, inviting criticism from all quarters.

The Pakistan skipper, who is Pakistan's most successful T20I captain - having won 40 out of 66 T20I matches - has lately been urged to give up his captaincy by former players and pundits.

Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi firmly believes that the once No.1 T20I batter in the world should step down from his role as the 20-overs skipper and focus on his batting.

Other candidates for the role of T20I captain are Muhammad Rizwan, who won the Pakistan Super League trophy with Multan Sultans multiple times; Shadab Khan, who leads Islamabad United; and Shaheen Afridi, who guided Lahore Qalandars to their first-ever PSL title win this year.

According to cricketpakistan, Afridi said,

“Babar Azam should quit the T20I captaincy and focus on his batting. We have other players who can lead the T20I team, like Shadab, Rizwan, and even Shan.”

Azam's next international assignment will be against an in-form England Test side, when Ben Stokes and Co. tour Pakistan for a three-match series next month.
