Australia's stellar performance too good for World Champions

On the back of outstanding innings from David Warner, Travis Head and Steve Smith, Australia outclassed the World Cup champions in the 1st ODI by six wickets at Adelaide Oval.

Malan bats deep to help England reach 287

It was a decent start for the hosts who knocked over four of England's wickets inside 14 overs after putting them into bat. Skipper Pat Cummins was the chief destroyer with the ball scalping Phil Salt and James Vince inside the powerplay.

Finding themselves in trouble, Dawid Malan took the responsibility to steady the ship with a small but useful contribution from captain Jos Buttler (29) who helped the team reach 118. However, wickets kept tumbling from the other end putting pressure back on Malan keeping them under check.

His resilience ensured that England reach a respectable total of 287 for nine wickets down after the end of 50 overs. Malan ended his innings after scoring career-best 134 off just 128 deliveries smashing four sixes and twelve fours along the way. David Willey also chipped in with his 34 which pushed the score in the end. Cummins and Adam Zampa scalped three wickets apiece to halt England to a chaseable total.

Australia's collective effort takes them home

Chasing 288 for victory, Australia's opening duo of David Warner and Travis Head were classic with their batting partnership. Scoring 147 for the first wicket, the hosts were extremely difficult for the visitors to dismiss. Chris Jordan dismissed Head on the score of 69, bringing in Steven Smith.

Warner continued his impressive show scoring 86 from 84 balls, taking his side to 200 inside 29 overs. New batter Marnus Labuschagne could not do much and left after scoring just four.

However, Smith smacked a magnificent 80 to finish the match for his side with a six. Handy knocks from Alex Carey (21) and Cameron Green (20*) were enough to take the match past the finish line.

Not much could be said about the bowling department as almost everyone proved expensive with two wickets from Willey and one each from Chris Jordan and Liam Dawson.

Brief Scores:

England: 287/9 (50 Overs)

Dawid Malan 134 (128), David Willey 34* (40);
