No harm in identifying new T20I captain: Ravi Shastri

Pandya is a potential candidate for India's T20I captaincy

After India's ouster in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 from the semifinals, calls for finding a suitable leader for the 2024 edition is growing. Skipper Rohit Sharma's declining form and issues with his fitness will most likely see him replaced in the coming months.

India will meet New Zealand in a three-match T20I series - starting this Friday - under stand-in captain Hardik Pandya, who according to many is a potential candidate to take over Sharma's throne.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri believes that the Board of Control for Cricket in India must look ahead and identify their next T20I captain.  Shastri, speaking with Amazon Prime, also spoke about head coach Rahul Dravid being granted breaks quite frequently.

"For T20 cricket, there is no harm in having a new captain. Because the volume of cricket is such that for one player, to play all three formats of the game is never going to be easy. If Rohit is already leading in Tests and ODIs, there is no harm in identifying a new T20I captain and if his name is Hardik Pandya, so be it."

Pandya faces tough competition from other candidates like Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, and KL Rahul, having led their respective franchises in the Indian Premier League.

Sharma, however, will in all likelyhood remain as India's One-Day International (ODI) captain till the ICC World Cup 2023 as announced during his appointment.
