Match 48 of the ongoing Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) 2022 saw retribution for the Hobart Hurricanes as they beat the Melbourne Stars by 38 runs, avenging their 4-wicket loss from Tuesday.

The victory moves the Hurricanes into third place with 15 points, while the loss diminishes  Melbourne's chances of a play-off finish, who are stuck on 10 points.

Mignon du Preez stands tall for Hobart

Asked to bat, Hobart's innings started off swiftly, with both openers coming down hard on their opponents. Lizelle Lee's departure for 24, did bring the momentum to a halt.

Mignon du Preez stood tall at one end as the other batters fell despite getting starts. Preez along with Nicola Carey added 49 valuable runs for the fourth wicket before the latter was snapped up by Annabel Sutherland.

Alice Capsey, who inflicted a brilliant run-out earlier, rocked the Hurricanes' late-middle order, picking up two quick wickets.

With wickets tumbling, du Preez registered her 16th half-century in the WBBL as the Hurricanes finished their innings at 152 for 7.

Bowlers choke Stars' chase

Chasing 153, the Stars lost Bess Heath in the first over itself. Lauran Winfield-Hill and Alice Capsey again consolidated for their side, sharing a 56-run stand for the second wicket.

Capsey fell for a well-made 38 off 26 to Ruth Johnston, which led to a collapse. Disciplined bowling ensured the Melbourne-based club never got ahead of the required run rate and were always behind the eight-ball.

Amy Smith knocked over Winfield-Hill for 22. Carey, Maisy Gibson, Johnston, and Smith claimed one wicket each, while Hayley Jensen picked up two wickets as the Stars managed just 114 runs in their quota of 20 overs, with Nicole Faltum and Sophie Reid still batting on 18 and 4, respectively.
