Former West Indies captain Carl Hooper has joined the Adelaide Strikers as their assistant coach for the Big Bash League 2022-23. Hopper will work under the guidance of head coach Jason Gillespie.

Hooper joins the star-studded coaching staff of the Strikers, already having the likes of Johan Botha and Gillespie. Hooper will mainly focus on batting, while Botha will oversee the bowling, fielding and tactical department.

The former West Indies player has featured in 329 international matches, scoring 11,523 runs and picking up 307 wickets, including 20 centuries and four five-wicket hauls.

Since taking retirement in 2003, Hooper has worked with Antigua Hawksbills and Guyana Amazon Warriors in various coaching roles.

Interestingly, the 55-year-old was the first cricketer to amass 5,000 runs, claim 100 wickets, grab 100 catches and appear in 100 matches in both Test and ODIs.

Hooper expressed his delight joining Strikers

"I have supported the Strikers quite closely since the inception of the BBL and can see plenty of promise in the current list. I’m looking forward to working with Dizzy (Jason Gillespie) and put a few new ideas forward from my own experiences in the game and to bring the best out of the players."

Head coach Gillespie welcomed the Caribbean legend

"Carl has a wealth of experience from a playing and coaching perspective both here and across the globe. He has a fantastic ability to connect with people and always has the players’ best interests at heart.”

Strikers begin their BBL 12 campaign against the Sydney Sixers on December 14.
