In what turns out to be a freaky and unfortunate injury, Glenn Maxwell has fractured the fibula in his left leg and has been ruled out of cricket for months, if not less. The Australian all-rounder slipped in the backyard during a birthday party, where he sustained a fracture.

As per Cricket Australia, the 34-year-old cricketer sustained the injury when he fell with a friend and his leg was trapped under the other person. The board further also wrote in a statement that neither of them were "intoxicated".

Maxwell, who was the Player of the Match in Australia's last Super 12 clash, will miss out on the ODI series against England at home, starting from Thursday, November 17. Meanwhile, Sean Abbott has replaced Maxwell in the squad for the ODI series.

The Melbourne-born player, on Sunday, underwent the surgery and will now undergo a lengthy rehabilitation before gaining full fitness. It is touted that Maxwell will miss the entire upcoming Big Bash season, where he leads Melbourne Stars.

“Glenn is a critical part of our white ball structure and we will continue to support him through his recovery and rehabilitation,” Australia's selection chief George Bailey said.

“Glenn is in good spirits. It was an unfortunate accident and we feel for Glenn in the circumstances given he was in great touch in his last few games."

With Indian Premier League's auction scheduled this month, it would be interesting to see weather Royal Challengers Bangalore release the Australian cricketer or play a punt on him.
