England won their last group stage match against Sri Lanka to book their spot in the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. It has been a shaky journey for the team but what matters in the end is that they have made it through. 

The Journey

England began their World Cup campaign with a win against Afghanistan. But in the very next encounter they faced a shock defeat against Ireland. 

England's survival was at stake for the last two group matches, and they lifted themselves from that point. Although, the Australia match being abandoned by rain was a setback, but wins against New Zealand and Sri Lanka, along with a few other results going their way have seen the English team as the second team from Group 1 into the semi-finals.

The batting analysis gives us an idea about the rocky journey that the English team is having in this World Cup. The biggest weakness of the English batting has been the middle overs. They have been able to score only 19 runs per wicket, while the scoring rate has also not been impressive.

The biggest strength for England has been the solid starts that they have been getting. A near run rate of 8 runs per over while scoring 58 runs per wicket is really impressive.

The fact that the two openers of the team have been the most impactful batters inherently point out that the weakness of the team's batting lies in the middle order.  Alex Hales, who is playing international cricket after a big interval is the most impactful batter for England which is a bit of a surprise though.

Sam Curran has been the most impactful bowler for England doing a great job in the death overs. The other bowler who has been upto the mark has been Mark Wood, while the others failed to impress so far. 

How to plan against England

  • England's biggest weakness in the Super 12 have been their game in the middle overs. Neither their batting or bowling have been upto the mark in middle overs. So, attack them in the phase in both the innings.
  • Try and dismiss the openers as quickly as possible and expose the middle order of the batting line up as quickly as possible. 
  • A proper plan against death over bowling of England is necessary as they have doing particularly well in that stage.
