Former Australian captain, Ricky Ponting has lauded Virat Kohli after his stellar knock against Bangladesh in the Super 12 game.

Kohli scored his third half-century of the ongoing T20 World Cup and remained unbeaten on 64. Moreover he surpassed Mahela Jayawardene to become the leading run-getter in the history of the T20 World Cup.

Now In an exclusive interview with OneCricket, Ponting hails Kohli and reckons that experience matters when you are heading into such a big tournament.

"I have been saying for the past few months that how important it is for India to stick with Virat heading into this tournament. And the one issue India had that all the cricket they have been playing and rotating players, and more often than not these players grabbed the opportunity. With Virat not in the side and these young players scoring runs, it became hard for India to stick with Virat.

But when you come to big events like these you need your experience star players as they generally turn up for the big games. That's what I've been saying about Virat from the start and we saw that in the game against Pakistan. I doubt that any other player in that side that could have taken them over the line in the end," Ponting stated.

After a close-fought win against Bangladesh, India will now face Zimbabwe in their last group stage game on Sunday. Rohit Sharma led Indian side are at the top of their group, with 3 wins under their belt.
