In a significant development, veteran India batter Shikhar Dhawan is set to lead the Punjab Kings franchise in the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). This news was surfaced by the team's official Twitter handle on Thursday.

Dhawan made his PBKS debut this year after regular opening batter KL Rahul had opted out of the side. Throughout the season, the left-hander minted 460 runs at an average of 38.33, with three crafty half-centuries to his name.

The cricketer has been rewarded with a big promotion in his subsequent season for the side, replacing his fellow opening partner as the skipper. Dhawan’s rise as new captain forms a part of a significant revamp within the franchise, which also saw the exit of Anil Kumble from his coaching duties this year.

Earlier, Trevor Bayliss was announced as Kumble’s successor, and the Australian is responsible for elevating Dhawan to the captaincy role.

Dhawan has previously helmed the Sunrisers Hyderabad, leading them to the playoffs in 2013. He has also led the Indian national team in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma recently.
