Shubman Gill is prepared to bat in the middle order in ODIs

2022 has been a stellar year for Shubman Gill in international cricket. After making his ODI comeback against the West Indies, the youngster has so far amassed 530 runs in nine innings at an extraordinary average of 75.71 and a blistering strike rate of 107.51. 

Although Gill opened the batting alongside Shikhar Dhawan against West Indies, he was demoted to number three, with KL Rahul returning in the Zimbabwe series. But the Punjab-born played his new role to perfection, hammering 245 runs at a Bradmanesque average of 122.50 in the series. 

Recently, Gill has stated to be ready to bat in the middle order for India in ODIs. Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, the 23-year-old said his ability to rotate the strike against the spinners makes him an ideal candidate for the middle order. He also sounded pretty confident about performing any role assigned by the team management in the upcoming ODIs. 

Here's what Gill stated

"My game all-round is very good and I rotate the strike well against spinners. So even if I get a chance in the middle order, I am ready for that. If they [the team management] are looking at me in the middle order, then I am ready for it. When I scored that hundred in Zimbabwe, I was batting at one down, I didn't open. So one down or two down, whatever the team needs, I am ready."

However, Gill recorded modest numbers in the South Africa ODIs, slamming 80 runs in three outings. He is gearing up for a new challenge, as India are scheduled to tour New Zealand for a three-match ODI series next month.
