Yet another World Cup game was washed out because of the persistant rain. The Super 12 game between Afghanistan and Ireland was abandoned without a ball being bowled at the MCG.

The pitch inspection by the umpires suggested that due to the relentless rain, there were wet patches forming on the edge of the outfield before the game was officialy called off.

Interestingly the abandonment was still over an hour before the scheduled cut off, although it was believed by the officials that it would take at-least an hour to dry the outfield.

Both teams share a point each, which means Ireland have 3 points at the points tally, while Afghanistan have 2 points under their belt.

What the captains have to say after the game?

"It's very disappointing, we've played good cricket and were looking forward to this game, but can't do much about the weather," Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie said.

"Most of the players are disappointed not having to play on such a fantastic ground. But the weather is not in our control, so we have to accept it," Afghanistan skipper Mohammad Nabi said.

What's next for both the sides?

Ireland will head towards Brisbane to take on the defending champions Australia on Monday, while Afghanistan will face off against Sri Lanka a day later.
