The former left-arm spinner Michael Yardy on Wednesday (October 26) has been announced as the head coach of the England U-19 team.

Yardy featured in 28 ODIs and 14 T20Is for England and scalped a total of 32 wickets. His international career lasted for four years between 2006 to 2011. He was a part of the champion English team in the T20 World Cup 2010.

The 41-year-old continued to play in domestic cricket until 2015 and finished with more than 10,000 runs and 200 wickets. His first-class career included 23 centuries.

Yardy served as the Academy director at Sussex County Cricket Club in the 2022 season. His previous coaching stints were at Kent and New South Wales.

The former southpaw has replaced Richard Dawson, who has moved to take up the role of assistant coach of the English senior white-ball team.

Yardy expressed his excitement to identify young talents of the country, and thinks it would be a great challenge for him to deliver good results.

Yardy speaks on the new role:

"It's a privilege to work with young players as they seek to make the next step in their career and I look forward to the challenge of doing that at international level.

"The Young Lions programme has helped to develop a number of very talented players across the last few years and it's an exciting prospect to be a part of that work and help identify and improve future England Men's cricketers."

The English U19 team will be on a Tour to Australia in early 2023, with the final fixtures yet to be confirmed.
