Australia and New Zealand faced each other in the opening match of the Super 12 of ICC T20 World Cup 2022 at SCG. The contest turned out be anticlimactic as New Zealand made it into a one-sided affair.

Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to field first. But the Aussie bowlers failed to stand upto the expectations of the skipper as they were taken to cleaner from the very beginning.

Fin Allen (42 off 16) opened the innings and gave the team a sparkling start. His innings set the tone for Devon Conway to settle down and then go after the bowling once he is comfortable. A peak into his innings will give us an idea of how Conway built his knock.

Observation

As we see that throughout the innings, Conway kept the scoreboard ticking. He made sure that the scoring rate of the team is always up. His ability to keep the scoring dynamic while holding one end made sure that the other batters around him took the full risk and helped New Zealand reach an above par total.

Observation

The scoring areas show that it was a conventional knock in every sense yet effective for the shortest format of the game. As a left hand batter, he scored most of his runs through the off-side, especially the cover region.

Conway's knock is an ideal example of what the game demands from the anchors at present. In an attempt to keep the wickets intact, Conway never hampered the scoring rate of the team. An ideal T20 knock from an opener in every sense and he was also the most impactful player of the match, without a doubt.
