Karthik Meiyappan from UAE, in the match against Sri Lanka grabbed the first hattrick of the T20 World Cup 2022 by scalping the wickets of Bhanuka Rajapaksa (5), Charith Asalanka (0) and Dasun Shanaka (0).

He delivered the spell of 3/19 against Sri Lanka, to put brakes on their innings.

By claiming this feat, he becomes the fifth bowler ever in T20 World Cup history after Brett Lee, Curtis Campher, Wanindu Hasaranga and Kagiso Rabada to grab the hattrick.

After achieving the record, the 22-year old said,

"Really happy to get a hat-trick against a Test-playing nation. Tried to keep things simple and it worked for me. It is a great feeling, it hasn't sunk in yet. To the lefty, I was bowling on the bigger side (leg side), when Sri Asalanka came in, I bowled a wrong'un. And the one to Shanaka was special for me. If we chase it down, it will be icing on the cake."

Meiyappan, a leg-spinner born in Chennai formerly part of UAE's U-19 World Cup team, has featured in eight ODI and 12 T20I matches for UAE before this game.

After being asked to bat first, Sri Lanka sets up a target of 153 on the board with significant contribution from Pathum Nissanka who smashed 74 from 60 deliveries.
