Namibia register surprising win against Sri Lanka to enter record books

In the opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, Namibia stunned the Asian champions, Sri Lanka  to register a 55 runs victory. 

While batting first in the match Namibia scored 163 runs in their 20 overs. Jan Frylinck was the highest scorer of the innings with 44 runs off 28 balls. JJ Smit also played a brilliant cameo of 31 runs off 16 balls to help his team reach an above per total. 

During the chase Sri Lanka lost the plot from the very beginning. Within the first 11 overs half of their side was back to the hut for an aggregate score of just 74 runs. The lower middle order did not offer any further resistance and the team was bundled for 108 runs, 56 runs of the target.

Third biggest win for an associate nation 

This win for Namibia in the match has become the third highest win by runs for an associate nation against a full member in T20Is. The the top fours instances in this regard are:

  1. Sharjah, 2016- Afghanistan beat Zimbabwe by 81 runs
  2. Nagpur, 2016- Afghanistan beat Zimbabwe by 59 runs
  3. Geelong, 2022- Namibia beat Sri Lanka by 55 runs
  4. Dubai, 2021- UAE beat Ireland by 54 runs
