Despite winning the 2022 County Championship, Surrey's assistant coach Azhar Mahmood does not seem to be content as he asks the team to spread their wings even further.

Mahmood praised Surrey for their great showing this season, however, added that the group of players can achieve so much more in the near future.

'There is a tremendous amount of talent in this squad'

The former Surrey all-rounder mentioned that there is no dearth of talent in the squad and how to bring the best out of the players is a challenge for the management.

"There is a real challenge now for us as management here at Surrey. We as coaches need to get better and better, as much as the players need to get fitter and stronger still, because there is so much more to come from this group," Mahmood said as quoted by Southwark news.

"Yes we are now county champions but, if we all get it right, what you will see in the coming years will be special. There is a tremendous amount of talent in this squad, and in particular a lot of young and very exciting young players. And, several times this season, the team had to respond during games when we went a bowler down through injury – and, every time, they did. That also shows real desire and togetherness," he added.

The county's success came after the change in management with Gareth Batty filling up the position of the interim head coach and Jim Troughton and Mahmood serving as his assistants.

The trio's performance was to be reviewed after the end of the season, however, the side's recent triumph seems to have provided enough reasons for their stay.
