After a fine performance against South Africa in the ODI series, young opener Shubman Gill is vying for the 2023 World Cup slated to be held in India. In absence of regular openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, Gill has stepped up with his game to prove his class in the format.

Currently, Gill is not the part of India's squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia. However, looking at his future plan, he expects himself to be a part of the mega-event next year at his home country.

During the interview, he mentioned that he has been looking forward to donning the jersey for India, adding it has been his childhood dream. Also, he said that times are exciting ahead with 50-over Asia Cup, a big opportunity to cement his place.

"I would love to be a part of any World Cup team, be it for the T20 World Cup or the ODI World Cup. I just want to keep performing the way I have been. I'm looking forward to it. It has been a childhood dream of mine to wear the Indian jersey and score as many runs for the country as I can. I am really thankful I am able to do that.

"We only discussed it to express ourselves and to believe in the process. It doesn't matter what happens. We are in an exciting period with the 50-over Asia Cup approaching. There is undoubtedly a lot of excitement about the World Cup being held in India as it is happening here for the first time after 2011."

The 23-year old has impressed everyone with his decent touch in recent times where his good run of form continued post his IPL stint with current champions Gujarat Titans. Gill has played a total of 11 Tests and 12 One-dayers, batting at an average of 57.90 in the latter format.
