Derbyshire have selected Leus du Plooy as their new leader as Billy Godleman has decided to step down from the role after playing the role for seven seasons for the team.

Godleman have in charge of the Derbyshire side since 2016 as a successor of Wayne Madsen. But after a tough summer this season he finally decided to step down from the role and hand over the role to someone younger keeping in mind the future of the club. Notably, he was not a part of the T20 Blast this season, it was Shan Masood who led the team in his absence with du Plooy as the vice captain.

As quoted by ESPNcricinfo, Godleman said-

"I sat down with Mickey and we had a good catch-up about the season and my thoughts about captaincy, future leadership and my seven seasons as captain. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as captain but reflecting on this season I think that with Mickey coming in and giving the club new impetus, the time is now right for me hand over the reins to a new leadership group as Wayne Madsen did to me in 2016."

Leus du Plooy has been an integral part of the team since 2019. Aged 27 du Plooy seems to be a long time investment for the role by the club. He is a South African born but qualifies as a local because of his Hungarian passport. Though du Plooy is a regular for Derbyshire in all formats of the game, his availability for the side in one day cup may be limited because of his involvement in The Hundred.

Godleman has confirmed that he will continue to be a part of the team and give the necessary support that the new skipper might need in leading the club to future glories.
