Will be a huge honour and privilege: Jess Jonassen on Australia's captaincy

Australian domination in women's cricket is nearly unparalleled in the sport. Only the great West Indies men's side in the 80s can match this current Australian Women's longevity, who stands at the pinnacle of cricket.

One of the main reasons behind Australia's stronghold is captain Meg Lanning. Lanning since taking over the captaincy has won multiple World Cups across formats and recently claimed a historic first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal.

Post CWG, Lanning announced a break from cricket with Australia looking for potential leaders for the future. Jess Jonassen is one of the prime candidates to lead the team.

She is an internal member of the Australian set-up, winning the last two World Cups and a CWG medal for Australia, where she defended 11 runs in the final against India.

The left-arm spinner has played 4 Tests, 85 ODIs, and 94 T20Is since 2012.

According to thewest, the spinner believed that it would be tough to fill Lanning's shoe while calling a chance to lead the side honorable.

"It would be a massive role and some big shoes to fill for whoever it is. I have tried to take on a leadership role the last couple of years with the spinning group,

If I was considered for (the captaincy) or given the nod for it then it would be a huge honour and a huge privilege."

Apart from Jonassen, the likes of Alyssa Healy, Tahlia McGrath, and Ellyse Perry are also in contention.

The 29-year-old is leading Brisbane Heat in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) 2022.
