He certainly impeded the bowler: Michael Hussey on Matthew Wade's incident

The first T20I between Australia and England made headlines for things apart from cricket. Once again, the spirit of the game was in question after Matthew Wade's alleged attempt to obstruct the field.

Wade tried to shake off England paceman Mark Wood, who was dashing to take a return catch off the former. While England won the match, captain Jos Buttler's decision to not appeal against Buttler have raised eyebrows.

Buttler remarked that his appeal would have faced backlash from fans and thus did not opt to go against Wade.

However, former Australia legend Michael Hussey and current member of England's white-ball coaching staff made it clear that Wade was in the wrong and that umpires should have been more proactive in the situation than Buttler.

Speaking to The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald Hussey said:

“But it would have been interesting if it was just left to the third umpire to make a decision, because I felt as though, watching, he certainly impeded the bowler from a chance to take the catch,

Obstructing the field doesn’t happen very often at all ... I probably would have appealed.”

The second match of the three-T20I series between arch-rivals will be played on Wednesday at Canberra.
