Adelaide Strikers appoints Johan Botha as the new Assistant coach

Former South African allrounder Johan Botha will join Adelaide Strikers' coaching panel as an Assistant Coach ahead of the 12th edition of the Big Bash League.

The former Proteas captain – who played 123 times for South Africa before becoming an Australian citizen in 2016 is set to support head coach Jason Gillespie in the upcoming season of the Big Bash as an Assistant Coach. He will primarily be focusing on bowling, fielding and tactics in order to help his team win the coveted BBL title.

Botha, who has featured in more than 600 matches across all three formats in a career spanning over two decades, played 27 matches for the club and also served as captain between BBL|02 and BBL|04. The ex-Proteas star is a veteran of 71 BBL matches including stints with the Sydney Sixers and most recently the Hobart Hurricanes in BBL|10.

Botha also boasts strong coaching credentials, serving as Head Coach for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League in 2018 and Islamabad United in the 2021 Pakistan Super League following several PSL assistant coaching roles.

Speaking about m his new job, Botha said he can't wait to join head coach Gillespie and other members of the Strikers staff.

“I have so many fantastic memories from Adelaide Oval and can’t wait to get to work with Jason Gillespie and the other Strikers support staff. “The squad has great potential coming off a really strong season last summer and I’m looking forward to what we can achieve together in BBL|12," said Johan Botha.

Head Coach Jason Gillespie said Botha would be a valuable addition to the club’s coaching team.

“Johan has an incredible cricket mind having played in every format and various leagues across the globe, “A man of his experience will be such an asset for our players and us as a collective coaching group. I can’t wait to work with him this summer,"  Jason Gillespie said.
