The middle-order batter David Bedingham has revealed his desire to feature for the South Africa Test team.

Bedingham, who made his domestic debut for the Western Province in the 2013 season has been one of the finest red-ball batters in the country.

With his grandparents born in England, he signed a contract with the Durham Cricket Club as a local player in 2020.

However, due to Brexit, he became an overseas player in the 2021 season. Bedingham then emerged as the top-scorer for Durham with 1029 runs at an average of 60.52, with a top score of 257.

In the recently concluded season, he hit 664 runs at an average of 47.42.  The 28-year-old has eclipsed many top English batters in the last two seasons.

Bedingham is in the process of qualifying to play for England as a local player, provided he spends certain time in the country, as per the guidelines.

However, the prolific batter is set to return to Cape Town ahead of the domestic season starting October 18.

Bedingham thinks he wants to score runs consistently, whether it be Durham or Western Province, and aimed to play for South Africa in the longest format.

“I would like to play Test cricket, but my focus is to score as many runs as possible for the WP and enjoy my cricket. I would love to get shortlisted [to play for the Proteas].”
