Warwickshire’s Liam Norwell claimed 9-62 against Hampshire in their final Division Two match of the County Championship 2022 season.

The speedster’s spell drove his side to just their second win of the year, as they narrowly trumped Yorkshire to claim eighth spot on the points table.

Liam Norwell hopes of making amends with teammates after absence

Norwell’s 9-62 in the second innings against Hampshire earned his side a thrilling five-run win at Birmingham. The cricketer also took four wickets for just 38 in the first innings to finish with a match-haul of 13-100.

The 30-year-old missed the majority of Warwickshire’s 2022 campaign owing to injuries and was playing just his third match of the season. While injuries to fast bowlers are an occupation hazard in the sport, Norwell seems to have taken his fitness setbacks to his heart.

After the match, the right-arm fast bowler said that he felt that he had let his team down due to extended absence this season. He said:

“I feel like I've let the lads and the management down quite a bit this year. Personally, I'm as frustrated as anyone about how the season has gone. Back issues, concussion, tearing my elbow - I'm as frustrated as anyone. I believe, without trying to sound arrogant, if I played more this season, we wouldn't be in this position… I just have that confidence in myself. And I hope I proved that today.”

The perennial underachiever has made 91 first-class appearances, taking 347 wickets at a proficient average of 24.66. Despite his County success, he is yet to make his Test debut for England.

When asked about the possibility of a debut following his remarkable spell, the speedster downplayed the same owing to his age.

“I'll be honest, now I'm 30 and there are younger lads come in like [Matthew] Potts, I don't think I have got a chance. But I will keep putting in performances and you never know.”
