South Africa succumbed to an eight-wicket defeat to hosts India in the first of their three-match series. The Proteas struggled against India’s new-ball attack, and lost half their side for just nine on the board after being put into bat.

While the series serves as a dress rehearsal for both sides ahead of the T20 World Cup next month, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his advice for struggling skipper Temba Bavuma.

Sunil Gavaskar gives Bavuma some tips on toss

The toss has played a major role in T20Is of late. A majority of matches at the 2022 Asia Cup were won by teams winning the toss and fielding first. The trend continued this month when India took on Australia in a three-match T20I series at home.

Moreover, even the first T20I between India and South Africa was won by the hosts after winning the toss and deciding to chase.

Sunil Gavaskar emphasised the importance of toss prior to the series opener itself. The cricketer-turned-commentator gave an important advice for South African skipper Temba Bavuma on the art of succeeding at the toss call. While speaking on Star Sports, the legendary batter said:

“Did he (Temba Bavuma) listen to what Aaron Finch was calling? Because look, Rohit Sharma won the toss. Which side did the coin fall on. It is going to be the same coin which is going to be used for the toss.

"So, if the coin is falling in a particular way, you have got to be smart not to call the wrong side. I am saying this because the toss is important. If it wasn’t, it wouldn’t have made a difference.”
