In a breathtaking exhibition of swing bowling, Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh and Deepak Chahar got on the throat of South African batters and restricted them to 30 for five inside the PowerPlay at Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday, September 28.

This is India's third-best bowling performance inside PowerPlay in T20 Internationals. The fast bowling duo of Arshdeep and Deepak Chahar achieved the milestone in the first T20I of the three-match series against South Africa.

The best bowling performance in PowerPlay from Men in Blue came against Afghanistan in the latest edition of Asia Cup, where the swing master Bhuvneshwar Kumar and the young left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh ran riot to restrict Mohammad Nabi-led side to 21 for five after six overs.

The second-best bowling performance from team India in PowerPlay came against the Island Nation back in 2016 in Visakhapatnam, where the Blue Shirts had restricted Sri Lanka to 29 for five inside PowerPlay.

Team India's Best Bowling Performance in PowerPlay:

  • 21/5 in six overs vs Afghanistan, 2022
  • 29/5 in five overs vs Sri Lanka, 2016
  • 30/5 in five overs vs South Africa, 2022*

A Recap of Arshdeep-Deepak's Carnage

Arshdeep Singh and Deepak Chahar ran rampant with the ball against the South Africa batting lineup to leave the visitors gasping for breath. The pace duo reduced South Africa to 9 for five within three overs, with three of them recording a golden duck.

Arshdeep found some mind-boggling swing to get rid of Rilee Rossouw and David Miller for a duck after rattling the timbers of the left-handed opener, Quinton de Kock, who could manage only 1 run off four deliveries.

As for Deepak Chahar, the new ball specialist took better of South African captain Temba Bavuma, sending him back to the pavilion for a duck and followed it by another wicket of young but destructive middle order batter Tristan Stubbs, who registered a golden duck as well.

As far as match is concerned, team India gunned down the victory target of 107 runs in 16.4 overs, courtesy of KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav's match-winning partnership of 93 runs to take an early lead in the series.

The Rohit Sharma-led outlet will now lock horns with South Africa in the second T20I at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati on October 2.
