Suryakumar Yadav, on Wednesday (September 28) broke Shikhar Dhawan's record for most T20I runs in a calendar year for the Indian cricket team during the series opener against South Africa on Wednesday in Thiruvananthapuram.

The India middle order batter is going through a purple patch in international cricket, especially in the shortest format of the game. He is on a record-breaking spree in T20 cricket and has already broken a number of batting records this year.

The hard-hitting batter was at it again when he took the field against South Africa in the opening T20I. The 32-year-old shattered the batting veteran Shikhar Dhawan's record of scoring most T20I runs in a calendar year for the Indian cricket team.

Prior to the series opener against South Africa, Suryakumar Yadav needed eight more runs to break Dhawan's T20I record, and he accomplished the milestone by smashing a towering six off Anrich Nortje's bowling during India's chase.

Suryakumar Yadav, the Go-to Man of Team India

Considered as one of the most destructive batters of the current time, Suryakumar Yadav once again rose up to the occasion and made mockery of South Africa's bowling attack, especially on the pitch that was assisting the pacers completely.

While the other batters, including India skipper Rohit Sharma and his predecessor Virat Kohli, struggled to get going on this pitch, Suryakumar played some breath-taking shots to take his side home.

KL Rahul, who played a steady knock of 56-ball 51 played a second fiddle to Suryakumar Yadav, who took on the Proteas' bowlers from the very first delivery. The duo assessed the batting conditions well and clobbered up a match-winning partnership of 93 runs.

Suryakumar Yadav has become India's mainstay middle-order batter in white-ball cricket ever since he made his international debut in 2021 following a couple of sensational seasons with Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.

Suryakumar, on Wednesday also made a quick jump to claim the number 2 position in the ICC Men's T20 rankings following his flamboyant 69 off 36 deliveries in the series decider against Australia in Hyderabad.

Yadav's swashbuckling inning helped India chase down the target of 187 and clinch the series 2-1. Heading into the T20 World Cup 2022, team India will bank on Suryakumar Yadav's batting exploits and will expect him to replicate his bilateral success in a showpiece event.
