Scotland's assistant coach Craig Wright withdraws ahead of T20 World Cup 2022

Scotland men's cricket team assistant coach Craig Wright has withdrawn his name from the Scotland party travelling to Australia for the T20 World Cup starting next month.

According to a report from The Cricketer, Wright, the former Scotland cricketer who is now an assistant coach and selector of the national side, will miss the mega event due to "personal reasons".

It is been reported that Wright refused to travel with Scotland's travelling team just a few hours before the tour party flew out for the multi-nation tournament. Wright was due to be part of head coach Shane Burger's backroom team in Australia. 

The ex-allrounder was a key figure in the squad selection process for the World Cup as one of only three individuals (Burger and batting consultant Steven Gilmour were the others) with voting rights given by the Scotland Cricket Board.

Former Scotland captain George Salmond chaired the selectors while Iqbal was an advisor and the players had an observer in Scottish Cricketers Association representative Ken Godsman. Cricket Scotland's interim head of performance, Toby Bailey, was also an observer. 

Wright played 20 one-day internationals and three T20 internationals for Scotland, taking 33 wickets as a right-arm medium pacer. He served as captain of the ODI team between 2006 and 2009 when he retired to focus on his coaching career. 

After taking retirement, he has previously served as interim head coach, most recently during the Cricket World Cup League 2 series against Papua New Guinea and Oman in Dubai earlier in the year when head coach Burger was unavailable.
