After Deepak Chahar and Arshdeep Singh ran over the Proteas batting line-up, India accomplished a small total in just 17 overs. Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul scored crucial fifties to finish the job. The Proteas were limited to just 106, which would never be enough against a solid Indian batting line-up.

India were already dealt with a blow when Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out to a back spasm before the match, and Chahar was drafted in as his replacement.

African innings in turmoil

Being asked to bat first on a green wicket in Trivandrum, South Africa choked early with five wickets falling in just 2.3 overs at the score of 9. Chahar and Arshdeep's early swing proved nearly impossible for the visitors even to have proper contact with the ball.

Chahar accounted for two, and Arshdeep three, enough to decimate the top-order, so much so that four out of the first six batters returned to the pavilion for naught, with de Kock reaching just 1.

Proteas looked in deep trouble when Aiden Markram's 25 and Wayne Parnell's 24 did help the side, although not significantly. Africa crossed the 100-run mark barely, with a beneficial and handy contribution from Keshav Maharaj, who scored 41 off 35 lower down the order.

The African side ended on 106 for the loss of eight wickets, with Harshal Patel accounting for two. Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin, too, bowled well with economical figures of 0/16 and 0/8 in four overs.

India aced the chase

Chasing 107 on a tricky wicket, India lost skipper Rohit Sharma (0) early, with swing posing a problem in the second innings too. Kagiso Rabada and Wayne Parnell were excellent with their moving deliveries, giving them a real hope to defend a meagre total.

Virat Kohli (3) too departed in the seventh over with a scorecard showing 17 on the board. However, even with difficult pace-suiting conditions, Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul took the responsibility to take their side home.

Smashing some fitting shots all over the park, SKY smacked a turbulent 50 from just 33 deliveries and Rahul, on the other end, played a silent game of 51 from 56. India crossed the line within 17 overs to acquire an early lead in the series.

Brief Scores:

South Africa: 106/8 (20 Overs)

Keshav Maharaj 41 (35), Aiden Markram 25 (24);
Arshdeep Singh 3/32 (4), Deepak Chahar 2/24 (4)

India: 110/2 (16.4 Overs)

KL Rahul 51* (56), Suryakumar Yadav 50* (33);
Kagiso Rabada 1/16 (4), Anrich Nortje 1/32 (3)

Match Result: India won by 8 wickets.
