Sanju Samson is likely to be India’s vice-captain for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. Team India is set to host the Proteas for 3 T20Is and 3 ODI matches starting September 28.

While Rohit Sharma’s drawcards will be available for the T20I segment of the home challenge, they will then travel to Australia for the next month’s T20 World Cup. India’s subsequent ODI series against the visitors will be played with an entirely separate batch of players, set to be helmed by interim skipper-coach combo of Shikhar Dhawan and VVS Laxman.

Sanju Samson likely to get promoted as vice-captain

Samson, who is currently leading the India A side against New Zealand A, has been tipped to be Dhawan’s deputy against South Africa. While no official announcement has been made on the matter yet, BCCI will soon be unveiling their squad for the imminent ODI series.

Samson toured Zimbabwe and West Indies for India’s white-ball assignments in August this year. Since then, the cricketer has been snubbed from the 2022 Asia Cup squad as well as for the home series against Australia. Moreover, he was also overlooked for India’s 15-player line-up for the T20 World Cup.

The right-hander has been in prolific run with the bat this year. The Kerala-based player notched up 458 runs while leading the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2022.

The dynamic batter has also struck scores of 29*, 37 and an attacking 54 against the New Zealand A attack in the recently-concluded List A series.
