Australian cricket has always been blessed to have aggressive openers available to them for selection, thanks to flourishing domestic cricket. With the imminent retirement of Test openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja in the near future, it is high time that Australia starts the search for their next breed of top-order batter.

Tasmania multi-format skipper Jordan Silk has backed his teammates Caleb Jewell and Tim Ward to carry forward Warner and Khawaja's legacy as Test openers. Both left-handed batters , Jewell and Ward had a magnificent Sheffield Shield 2021-21 season, scoring 553 and 508 runs, respectively.

Silk, a top-order batter himself, might be recalled for notching up 514 runs last season, speaking on CA's The Unplayable Podcast also opened up about moving down order for his state side.

Silk on Jewell and Ward

"There are some great options in Australia moving forward. I love the look of our two left-hand opening batters now in Caleb Jewel and Tim Ward who are both coming off pretty good seasons last year. I think they may be the forgotten people in all this discussion around who our next openers are."

"I'm really hoping these two are long-term openers for Tasmania and even beyond that for Australia."

Ward made his FC debut in 2021, while Jewell has been playing for Tasmania since 2016.
