Pakistan skipper Babar Azam and his opening partner Mohammad Rizwan tracked down the English total with ease, and brought the series to levelling terms while they were at it.

Azam scored an unbeaten 110 during his 203-run stand with Rizwan, and was adjudged as ‘Player of the Match’ for his winning effort. The cricketer also completed 8,000 runs in T20s, thus becoming only the second Pakistani to do so after Shoaib Malik.

Several other records unfurled during the Pakistani run-fest, including an all-time world record among opening stands in T20Is.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan plunder records amidst dominant run-chase

Azam and Rizwan’s 203-run stand now marks the highest opening partnership in T20I during a run-chase. The duo bettered their own record of 197 they had piled up against South Africa at Centurion in April 2021.

Notably, the Pakistan skipper slammed tons on both occasions, which also marks the only two centuries of his T20I career.

The two batsmen also became the only pair to record 150-plus partnerships five times in T20 cricket. Previously, RCB’s batting guns Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers had achieved the same four times during their playing days together.

Remarkably, the five 150-plus stands put up by Azam and Rizwan have all been recorded at the international stage. The next best record-holders in T20Is are India’s Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma with two such partnerships.

Babar Azam also came agonisingly close to bettering his own record of belting the highest score by a captain in T20Is. He previously scored 122 off just 59 balls against the South African attack last year, in the same game where he formed a 197-run stand with Rizwan.

Additionally, Pakistan also became the first ever team in T20 cricket to successfully chase down a 200-plus target without losing a wicket. They trumped over the previous record held by the Kolkata Knight Riders in an IPL 2017 fixture, where they overhauled the Gujarat Lions’ 183-run total.
