Wicketkeeper batter Nurul Hasan has been named as captain of the Bangladesh T20I team in place of Shakib Al Hasan for the upcoming two-match T20I series against UAE in Dubai.

According to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Shakib, who led Bangladesh in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022 has made himself unavailable and opted to play in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League 2022. The Bangladesh stalwart is playing for the Amazon Warriors as a replacement for Tabraiz Shamsi though he hasn't made an appearance this season.

BCB confirms Shakib's unavailability

"Shakib (Al Hasan) is unavailable in UAE,"  BCB cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus was quoted as saying to Cricbuzz on Wednesday, September 21.

One of the prime reasons why Shakib has opted out of the two-match series in UAE is due to Bangladesh's poor performance in the Asia Cup, where they finished last in the group stages.

To make up for Shakib's absence from the squad, the selectors have included three of the four standby players in the squad.

Nurul was named the captain for the recent tour of Zimbabwe after Mahmudullah was removed as captain due to lack of results. However, Shakib took the reins of the team for the Asia Cup 2022 after Nurul was ruled out due to a finger injury.

The white-ball series, which will take place at Dubai International Cricket Stadium will be key to Bangladesh’s preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia starting next month.

Bangladesh T20I Squad: Nurul Hasan (Captain), Sabbir Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Afif Hossain, Mosaddek Hossain, Litton Das, Yasir Ali, Mustafizur Rahman, Mohammad Saifuddin, Taskin Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain, Hasan Mahmud, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Nasum Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Soumya Sarkar, Rishad Hossain
