Team India skipper Rohit Sharma etched his name in the history books on Tuesday (September 20) as the swashbuckling opener equalled New Zealand batter Martin Guptill’s record of most sixes in T20 Internationals.

The India skipper achieved the landmark during the first T20I between Team India and Australia at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.

Though Rohit's stay in the ring was relatively short, having scored just 11 off 9 deliveries, he did manage to equal a massive record in the shortest format of the game.

The all-time leading run-scorer in the history of T20I cricket, Rohit Sharma struck Australia star pacer Pat Cummins for a towering six in the second over of the Indian innings to achieve the milestone.

Sharma now has 172 sixes under his belt in 137 T20Is he played while New Zealand opener Guptill has smoked 172 sixes in a total of 121 T20I appearances.

The power-hitting duo of Rohit Sharma and Martin Guptill is followed by West Indies batting legend Chris Gayle, who smashed 124 sixes in just 79 matches.

England's world cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan stands next in the tally with 120 sixes while Australian skipper Finch has whacked 117 maximums in his T20I career.

Players with most sixes in T20Is:

  • Martin Guptill (New Zealand) - 172 in 121 matches
  • Rohit Sharma (India) - 172 in 137 matches
  • Chris Gayle (West Indies) - 124 in 79 matches
  • Eoin Morgan (England/Ireland) - 120 from 115 matches
  • Aaron Finch (Australia)- 117 from 92 matches

Rohit Sharma has got some stupendous numbers in the shortest format of the game. He is currently the highest run-getter in the history of T20I with 3631 runs. The India skipper is well followed by his predecessor, Virat Kohli, who has got 3586 runs in T20Is thus far.

The stylish opener also holds the record for the most number of centuries (4) by any player in the history of T20I cricket and is the batter with the most 50-plus scores in T20Is (32) after Virat Kohli, who has 33 fifty-plus scores in his impressive T20I career.
