New Zealand Women secured a five-run victory over West Indies Women in the first game of the ODI series on Monday (September 19) at North Sound, Antigua.

West Indies post a competitive total

The match had a delayed start, due to rain, which resulted in a revised bowling quota of 35 overs for both teams. Invited to bat first, West Indies were off to a stable start with Rashada Williams (19) and Natasha McLean (20). However, their quick dismissals triggered the collapse of the team.

The team's key players, Stafanie Taylor (8) and Hayley Matthews (2) were dismissed by Fran Jones, which reduced the Caribbean team to 74/5 in the 21st over.

However, Kyshona Knight (36) and Chinelle Henry (44) resurrected the innings and steered the team to a total of 168 in 35 overs.

The Kiwi team had an impressive start in their chase of 169, with Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine. The duo added 54 runs for the first wicket, before Matthews got rid of Devine (25).

Bates displayed composure to play the balls on their merit, and hit 51 off 65, laced with six fours. Afterwards, Amelia Kerr remained unbeaten on 47 off 67, with New Zealand on 159/5 in 33 overs.

The last two overs were not possible due to bad light, and New Zealand managed to win the game by five runs.
