Batting legend Ricky Ponting has revealed his choice to lead Australia’s ODI side after regular skipper Aaron Finch announced his retirement from the format. The former cricketer shared his opinion at a time when Cricket Australia is considering possible candidates for the top role.

Ponting backs Test skipper to lead Australia in ODIs

While speaking on the ICC Review Show, Ponting revealed his confidence in Pat Cummins to lead Australia in ODIs. Notably, the speedster also took over the Test leadership earlier this year, and led his side to a remarkable series win in Pakistan.

The former Australian skipper added that while he was aware about Cummins playing lesser white-ball games to manage his Test workload, he claimed he would still be surprised if the pacer was not picked as ODI captain.

“I think it’ll be Pat Cummins, to be honest. I know he doesn’t play all the ODIs for obvious reasons because his workload in Tests has been, like all the fast bowlers, very high in the last few years. But look, I’ll be surprised if it wasn’t Pat Cummins.”

The two-time World Cup winning captain also shared his opinion over David Warner’s leadership ban. He believes that Warner can be utilised as a deputy to the next captain, similar to how Steve Smith was appointed as Australia’s vice-captain in Tests.

Meanwhile, Cricket Australia have stated that they will not be announcing their next ODI skipper until the conclusion of next month’s T20I World Cup at home.
