Following a 1-2 loss in the three-match T20I series against England, India started One Day Internationals with a bang. The Women in Blue have taken a considerable lead of 1-0 by scoring a victory in the first ODI by seven wickets. It was a terrific all-round performance by the visitors as they outclassed England in all three facets of the game.

Meanwhile, it was a bad day at the office for the English batters. Put to bat first, the host delivered a lukewarm performance. England started the innings on a poor note as they lost both their opening batters, Emma Lamb and Tammy Beaumont, within nine overs at a score of 21. The right-arm seamer Meghna Singh gave the first breakthrough to her team, followed by the veteran Jhulan Goswami.

Smriti Mandhana delivers a scintillating performance

India picked wickets at regular intervals throughout the first innings to ensure momentum on their side. Despite the torrid start, England managed a score of 227 runs with Davidson Richards and Danielle Wyatt adding 50 and 43 runs to the scoreboard.

In the second innings, England had a blistering start as Shafali Verma walked back to the stadium after scoring just one run off six balls. However, the other opening batter Smriti Mandhana caused carnage on the field as she smacked 91 runs. There were also valuable contributions from skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia, as India won the game in 44.2 overs.

Jones on England’s performance

Despite the seven-wicket loss, England Women captain Amy Jones seemed proud of her team. The wicketkeeper reflected on the shortcomings with the bat and ball while hailing the opposition for a brilliant win. Meanwhile, she also showed faith in bouncing back stronger in the second T20I to level the scores.

In the post-match presentation, Jones said,

"It's disappointing, but we batted brilliantly towards the end and needed a few wickets in a power play to have a chance. We thought it was a trickier wicket but I think the Indians bowled well and put us under a lot of pressure.

“The fall of regular wickets and it got hard towards the end, the partnership between Sophie and Alice gave us a chance. Smriti and Harman batted pretty well and didn't give us a chance to come back in the game."
