Smriti Mandhana struck 91 to guide India Women to an easy win over hosts England in the first ODI at Hove. The victory granted the ‘Women in Blue’ a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, after they had lost the T20I segment of the tour.

After the match, Mandhana thanked the Indian crowd for their support at the venue and also dedicated the performance to senior teammate Jhulan Goswami.

ENG vs IND 2022: Mandhana wished to stay unbeaten in run-chase

The star Indian batter helped her side chase down England’s 227 with more than five overs to spare. She launched crucial partnerships with wicketkeeper Yastika Bhatia and captain Harmanpreet Kaur after losing Shafali Verma in the second over of the innings.

After the match, Mandhana said that she would have enjoyed India’s win more had she stayed unbeaten in the run-chase. She also thanked the Indian crowd present at the County Ground at Hove for their support in the match.

Fittingly adjudged as ‘Player of the Match’ for her 91-run knock, she added that the team will be dedicating their series performance to all-time bowling great Jhulan Goswami.

“I would've enjoyed it a little better if I had stayed until the end, but thank you to the Indian crowd, everywhere we play, we get brilliant support! I think the ODI format is a very natural game for me because I just like to go out there and time the ball.”

“In T20s I have to put in a bit more effort to maintain the format, but regardless of the format, to score for India and get a W on the board is a special feeling. Good that Harman finally won the toss, and we got to see the wicket first, and when the ball was staying low, I had to give up my backfoot game a bit here. I would also like to mention that whatever we play in this series is dedicated to 'Jhulu Di'.”
