Team India failed to make their mark in the Asia Cup 2022 as they ended up in third place in the Super Four round. Though India had a torrid ride, former Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, returning to form emerged as the biggest positive for the team. Coming after a break of over a month, Kohli ended up amassing 276 runs in five games at an average of 92.

He also put an end to his century drought of over 1020 days by smacking 122* runs against Afghanistan off just 61 balls. Former Australian skipper Mitchell Johnson believes that Kohli being back amongst runs will be the biggest boon for India ahead of the T20I World Cup 2022, scheduled in Australia.

Johnson on Virat Kohli’s form

Johnson claimed that the 33-year-old has been an impact player. His form will provide stability to the batting line-up and will give the team confidence to do well and lift the trophy.

Speaking with ANI, Johnson reckoned:

"It is good for India when their best players can make runs and keep the side confident. He is that player who changed the focus of the team when he took on the captaincy. The team will be happy that he is scoring runs. They have to be looking at winning the series in tough conditions. This will give them confidence heading into the World Cup. They should have a solid and settled team going into it. It will be a great series.”

Former Aussie skipper backs India

India have been at the receiving end of a lot of criticism and scrutiny for their lukewarm performance in the Asia Cup. Captain Rohit Sharma and the team management have been aggressively questioned for their team selection. Reflecting on the same, Johnson claimed that the Men in Blue will put all these things behind them during the T20I World Cup.

He also believes that Indian players have good experience of playing in big tournaments due to the Indian Premier League. Ahead of the ICC event, the team will be facing Australia and South Africa in a three-match T20I series.

Johnson concluded:

"When it comes to the World Cup, you just enjoy the moment. You need to focus. They are all big teams. Indians are used to playing big games because of the IPL, playing in front of large crowds with a lot of pressure. I think all that stuff (Asia Cup performance) will be behind them.”
