English all-rounder Chris Woakes is set to make a return to the national side after a summer-long injury battle. The cricketer played the last of his 45 Tests against West Indies back in March this year.

A subsequent knee injury kept him out of the entirety of England’s home season, which included Test series against New Zealand and South Africa as well as domestic competitions like The Hundred, T20 Blast and a major chunk of County Championship matches.

Woakes eager to play cricket after “frustrating battle” with injury

Woakes underwent a successful surgery in July and has been selected in England’s squad for their upcoming seven-T20I tour to Pakistan.

The cricketer is also a part of an expanding touring party for next month’s T20 World Cup in Australia. Ahead of his comeback series, the 33-year-old has spoken about his personal battle and his plans for the upcoming games.

The all-rounder said:

“It has been really frustrating. You never want to be injured but, for me as a player, I want to play as much cricket as possible in English summers because that’s where I feel I’m at my best.”

He is also aiming the seven-match T20I series in Pakistan as a building block towards the T20 World Cup.

“I am back bowling now and feeling a lot better. I’m still a way off bowling a load of overs but in Pakistan and the T20 World Cup the max you can bowl is four. I’ve been working hard in the gym pretty much all summer so I feel physically quite good and I’ll use the Pakistan tour as a building block towards the World Cup.”
